People's Republic of China Holes

People’s Republic of China Holes (seals on the earth) is comprised of 63 manholes photographed in and around Beijing and Shanghai in the summer of 2006 and assembled to make a square. The manholes have the same finality and imprint as the seals used on Chinese scrolls—casual and yet deliberate, important, but not the “main event”. Manholes, functional and below the eye’s purview, have their own texture, color, framing, personality and story that come alive in this piece.
